I love a selfie. I especially love a snapchat filtered selfie. If you follow my Snapchat (@roxylola) you would know that I am filter obsessed. It gives it purpose. You assume a role. Whether that be of a dog or a viking, you take on a persona. Sorry Snapchat, but Cindy Sherman did it first. And about 45 years earlier. Inspired by Hollywood movies, Sherman has been dressing up and selfie-ing since the 1970s. However, she made a career out of it. And what a career it is. Breaking boundaries, Sherman become a master of the now. Photographing herself in her studio, creating different characters, the whole production was her. Now the masterpieces are coming to the country. So if you’re in need of a little selfie inspiration off to Brisbane we go.
The first major Australian solo exhibition in more than 15 years will open at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) from 28 May to 3 October this year.
